Cross Before Crown

by Andrew Forrest

Jesus is clear with his followers: it’s Cross before Crown; you have to lose your life to find it.

Where do you need to die to yourself today?

Pastor Andrew,

Since losing my job, I have been distraught and fear losing my house. I feel guilty for being afraid of losing a material possession but also feel I deserve to have a home just like the next person. Should I take this passage to mean I should deny myself this and lose it in order to be rewarded in the future?

No, I don’t think so. Denying yourself does NOT mean doing things that are unpleasant or imprudent. Denying yourself means not allowing your selfish concerns to stand in the way of faithfulness. So, if God were calling you to be a missionary in India, but you were refusing to go because you didn’t want to sell your house, that would be a problem. But, trying to persevere through financial difficulties is not the same thing.

Does that make sense?
